What:    Benefit Fundraiser for the Residents of The Avalon,

              2627 Adams Mill Road, NW

When:    Friday, October 12, 2007 from 5-10 p.m.

Where:   Grand Central

               2447 18th St. NW, Washington, DC 20009

Why:    To provide the displaced residents with monetary gifts and donations to help offset their continued required condo fees and mortgages, all the while rebuilding their homes and lives.

How you can help: Attend this event to meet with and provide comfort to the residents, and drop off your donations.

The tragic condo fire at 2627 Adams Mill Road in Adams Morgan on October 1, 2007 spared the lives of 45 residents (and pets) but relentlessly burned the building and everything within it to the ground. To add insult to injury, building smoke alarms never set off and inadequate water pressure in the neighborhood prevented firefighters from effectively performing their job.

The residents of The Avalon are a hard hit, grateful community in need of your help. Please attend this neighborhood fundraiser to meet with and rally around the residents in a show of your generous support.

Special thanks to Brian Vasile from Grand Central for donating his space for this event.

Survivors’ Needs:

The 45 residents of The Avalon are lucky in that they all survived the fire, unharmed. The building management company has decided to rebuild; construction is estimated to take 10-14 months. During this time, the displaced homeowners must continue to pay their condo association fees and mortgages… all while trying to rebuild their lives from the ground up in temporary housing. Being a smaller building, the association's reserves are not significant and cannot automatically offset the condo fees. Offsetting condo fees even a small amount will help everyone's immediate need for an increased cash flow.

Some individuals were hit harder than others, depending on their location in the building and ownership of quality insurance. All of these individuals are temporarily homeless, some without any worldly belongings, and gratefully in need of help.  The board, which is comprised of the residents themselves, will be the responsible party for distributing funds and gifts on a sliding scale according to specific need.

Giving

Individuals can help best with gently used items or monetary donations. Businesses can help best with coupons/gift cards for services and products (dinner, mattresses, etc.)
